This past Saturday, Kira Singh, a tenth-grader from Rochester’s own Edison High School, was presented with the first place prize for the Rising Stars National Writing Competition. The essay-writing contest received submissions from over two thousand high school students, and Kira was thrilled to be presented with the final trophy at a small ceremony at city hall, attended only by two CITY newspaper reporters and Kira’s older sister Hannah. “I’m just totally shocked,” the bubbly 15-year-old told us. “It’s so amazing!”
We couldn’t agree more. Kira, having bounced between foster homes with her sister since she was four, has faced an uphill battle to be recognized for her talents. But if her victory this week is anything to go by, she has a bright future ahead of her. Being shy in front of cameras, Kira didn’t stay for long—but when asked if she would continue her passion for writing, she replied with a full-hearted yes.
